(Jesus continued) “Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 6:1

Once again Lord I have to thank You for Your patience with us.

How easy it is for us to get caught up in pleasing others rather than You.

Thank You for seeing us for who we truly are and knowing what our motives are.

Oh how grateful we are for Your unconditional love.

Thank You! Thank You Lord.

(Jesus continued) “And if you salute only your brethren, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? You therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Matthew 5:47, 48.

Oh Lord how we all wish we could be perfect like you are perfect. We all strive to be there and yet we so often fall so short.

Thank You Lord for Your wisdom and insight as we walk with You.

Thank You for Your love and compassion when we stumble and fall.

Your love is with us always and we thank You and praise You for it.

Thank You Lord.

(Jesus continued) “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and seeds rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?” Matthew 5:43 – 47

Lord, thank You for Your strength. Without Your help we could never love our enemies.

Thank You.

Thank You Lord.

(Jesus continued) “Give to him who begs from you and do not refuse him who would borrow from you.” Matthew 5:42

Thank You Lord for the gift of giving.

Thank You for Your discernment when we give.

Lord all we have is because of You.

Thank You for giving Your all for us.

Thank You Lord.

(Jesus continued) “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, Do not resist one who is evil. But if any one strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also; and if any one forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.” Matthew 5:38 – 41

Lord it seems You are expecting the impossible from us.

In our own strength that is true Lord but with Your help all things are possible. If you are asking something of us You will give us the ability to do it.

Thank You Lord!

Thank You.

(Jesus continued) “Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.” Matthew 5:37

Lord it seems people were trying to get their view out as ‘gospel’ all the while making false accounts and accusations. They apparently wanted to become more ‘believable’ by saying more than yes or no.

Lord …apparently these people were not interested in what You could do in their life. Thank You for Your changing power.

Thank You for the joy that is ours when we do as you ask us to do.

I love you Lord. Thank You for Your help.

Thank You Lord.

(Jesus continued) “And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.” Matthew 5:36

Lord how this verse reminds us what little control we have over the houses (our bodies) that we live in. You certainly remind all of us that You are the one that is in control. Oh we have products today that can change the color of our hair but You are the master of our fate. This verse certainly strikes home for me because I was in the 5th grade when the person sitting behind me announced to everyone by pulling a long white hair out of my curly beautiful auburn hair – ‘ooooooo a gray hair.’ Of course I was embarrassed – humiliated – as the whole class laughed. Yes, Lord we are reminded that You are totally in control of our lives.

Lord, thank You for loving us with Your unconditional love and wanting the very best for each of our lives.

Oh how we thank You and praise You.

Thank You Lord.

(Jesus continued) “Again you have heard that it was said to the men of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’” Matthew 5:33

Thank You Lord for Your tolerance with us.

Thank You for always inviting us back when we stumble and fall.

Lord You are always with us. Thank You for Your unconditional love.

Thank You Lord.

(Jesus continued) “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ But I say to you that every one who divorces his wife, except on the grounds of unchastity, makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.” Matthew 5:31, 32

Lord, what shall I say being a divorced woman myself. Certainly this is not something You or I would want for anyone’s life and yet there are so many people today that are where I am. Our love for You has never changed….just our circumstance in our lives. We cling to You as our only hope. You are there. You heal. You bring joy in the midst of our pain.

Thank You Lord for loving us through our ups and our downs in our lives.

Thank You for Your forgiveness when we cry out to You.

Thank You for healing our hurts and bring comfort when we so desperately need it.

Your love abounds Lord in spite of our shortcomings and OH…how we need Your love when we are hurting so badly. Thank You!

Thank You Lord.

(Jesus continued) “And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better that you lost one of your members than that your whole body go into hell. Matthew 5:30

Lord once again we have to step back and wonder about Your strong words against sin. Two verses now tell us how serious sin is in our lives. Verse 29 talks about plucking out your eye and this verse talks about cutting off your right hand. Both are very valuable parts of our bodies. This reminds us of the need to stay close to You to avoid sin in our lives.

Thank You Lord that You were our example.

Thank You for giving us the opportunity to cry out to You when we need help.

Thank You for always hearing us and helping….Oh it maybe instant or it may be wait. You are there working all the details out.

Thank You Lord.
